How To Do Yoga

Now that we have learnt the 1st part of how to do yoga – get a prayer mat, where we can sit and stand and exercise and meditate, we have got into our loose fitting cotton garments and now are doing a bit of deep breathing to calm ourselves down, we need to think about what we are going to do next. We are going to start with beginner poses which we are going to hold for a couple of seconds at the most. It is only when we become really proficient in yoga that we can hold these poses for up to 1 min. if we want. We want tranquillity and repose and a sense of harmonious physical and mental balance, not sore and aching muscles at the end of the day, do we.

We start with the Padmasana or the Lotus pose. We are just going to sit with our feet under our knees with our backs straight. We are going to take deep breaths holding each breath to a count of 5, and then exhaling. After that we are going to do the Shavasana. This is normally known as the Corpse Pose. In fact, I find this the best way to get my tense body back into state of equilibrium after vigorous mental and physical exertion. Just lie down on your back with your eyes shut and your palms facing the ceiling. Do not get up until you find yourself completely tranquil and back to the state of calm equilibrium. Does wonders for a palpitating heart or for stress!

How To Do Yoga

Remember that these poses should be done with synchronized deep breathing, breathe in – breathe out, – hold breath, exhale. After that, you may want to try the cobra pose. Lie on your stomach. Now slowly raise your upper torso on your arms. Start bending your head back slowly towards your spinal cord. Visualize the cobra raising itself from the ground and bending its head back to stare at the sun.

Not only is this a really good exercise to take care of your spinal cord on how to do yoga, but it clears up any sort of chest congestion really fast. We kids were taught to do the cobra pose at school at a very young age. The aim was to strengthen our spinal cords and so that our arm and shoulder muscles would grow to be really flexible. It worked! These are really easy beginner poses which can be done by everybody. You do not have to waste a lot of energy doing these exercises. But you are going to be surprised to see that just the deep breathing exercises and these physical body movements are quite enough to make you feel really good throughout the day!
